I am committed to facing an on-going life of suffering for the sake of the Gospel and willing to face persecution with national believers

The Christian life is one of joy and forgiveness in Jesus. It can also be one of suffering. Believers may face persecution for the sake of the Gospel. Jesus was familiar with suffering and endured persecution because of his identity and actions. His death on the cross, planned and carried out by humans, involved suffering but also provided a pathway to holiness and forgiveness (Isa. 53:3-5, Heb. 13:12). The early church was persecuted, and many were scattered as a result (Acts 8:1-3). One consequence of this scattering was that those in widespread areas were able to hear the gospel message from Christians who had been displaced from their original homes (Acts 11:19-21). Paul the Apostle endured intense and varied persecution over many years. In spite of this, he boasted in his weakness and gave praise to God (2 Cor. 11:24-31). He also invited others to join with him in suffering for the gospel (2 Tim. 1:8. 2:3). Paul reminds us that hardship or persecution or dangers will not be able to separate Christians from the love of God. Christians are conquerors, and this brings hope during times of suffering (Rom 8:35-39). Paul states that he endures everything for the sake of others, that they may be able to receive salvation in Jesus (2 Tim 2:10).

Christian workers may face suffering as they serve in other areas. They and/or national believers may be persecuted because of their faith in Jesus. During these times it is important to remember that they are not separated from God’s presence and love, and that this endurance has an ultimate purpose: to glorify God and allow others to receive his salvation.

Those serving in Muslim contexts may face personal suffering. Living conditions and access to medical care may not be what they experienced in their home area. Friends and family members are far away. In addition, they may experience criticism or persecution from Muslims or local authorities. Believers from a Muslim background who have chosen to follow Jesus may experience persecution of varying levels. Because of their connection with these believers, Christian workers may also face persecution. It is important that workers in Muslim contexts are aware of these risks and are willing to face them in the strength of the Spirit.
