I have a positive outlook on life, knowing God is in control
Christian workers face many challenges in ministry. It is easy to become discouraged. During these times, it is important to reflect on God. He is the Creator of all things (Isa. 40:28, 42:5-6) He knows all things and has a tender love for his creation (Luke 12:7, 1 John 3:20). He desires that none would perish but that all would come to repentance (2 Pet. 3:16). God is continually with those who are fulfilling the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20). God is also all-powerful and in control. He is the one who directs the universe. He is sovereign (Ps. 71:15-17, Acts 4:23-25). Because of God’s character and power, workers can have a positive outlook on life. God is aware of their circumstances, both positive and negative. He knows them intimately, including their struggles, fears, and hopes (Ps. 139). He is aware of spiritual forces which seek to accuse, deceive, or destroy the worker. God is in control, however. He promises to accomplish his work. God uses frail humans to carry out his eternal work. In 2 Cor 4:6-12, Paul the Apostle reminds Christians that God’s light has shown into their hearts. Though this treasure resides in jars of clay, God provides power. Paul states that they are both hard pressed and persecuted. Despite this, they are not crushed or destroyed (4:8-9). Their hope is in God. The fact that God is in control allows Paul and his companions to have hope in dire circumstances. Cross-cultural workers today can exhibit a positive outlook because the same God is in control now.
Those serving in Muslim contexts may at times doubt that God is in control. Resistance of individuals to the gospel, suspicion towards them as Christian workers, and criticism of those who choose to follow Jesus may bring discouragement. Satan’s attacks may contribute to negative thoughts. During these times, it is important to remember that the God who created the heavens and the earth is in control. This sovereign Lord will accomplish his purposes in his time, regardless of opposition. He also allows humans the privilege of serving with him. Workers have reason for optimism as they minister in hard places.
