  5. Develop personal patterns and practices of life which sustains personal, family, and team members

Language & Cultural Adjustment

  1. Church Planters work hard at learning the target language (most people must spend 30 to 40 hours per week)  (NOTE:  this amount of time may not be feasible for people starting a business but important to have an expectation that this may be necessary for up to 2 years).

  2. Language-learning program and accountability in place

  3. Daily language practice with local people

  4. Learn how to survive in area chosen, get comfortable, and enjoy life among the people in the new community

  5. Discern what the Christian life should look like in this culture and begin to model it 

  6. Start residency procedure on basis of strategy; may arise out of the business or other platform.

  7. Develop multiple relationships of varying depth with target persons

  8. Prayerfully evaluate your friends for a prospective "man of peace"; someone who has influence and can interest others?

  9. Enable all members of the family to develop relationships with target persons 

  10. Bring redemptive elements into your relationships

  11. Enhance character through the stress of adapting personally, as a family, and as a team to the culture

  12. Discover any evangelistic tools available in your target language, choosing those the local believers can use

  13. Choose approach and attitude towards religious practices and level of involvement, if any, with them  (overcoming the “us” “them dichotomy).  Attitudes towards other and their culture/religious practices.   Course on contextualization

Local Community Research
对社区和区域进行当地考察

Mapping the area

  1. Identity:  To identify what people are there and how they relate to other villages (this is learned little by little during language and culture acquisition).  ho are the people that make up this city or region? What people groups are there and what languages do they speak? What social class divisions are there? Who are the poor and destitute?

  2. Location:  What are the geographic divisions of the area?  What is the total population, the urban and rural population, the population of men, women, children, youth and adults of the city. How many households or dwellings are there?

  3. Description:  What is the political, economic, social, and religious condition of the city? What is the moral condition? What are “the sins of the fathers”? What are the reasons for these conditions? What are the basic needs of society? What are the types and levels of poverty and oppression?

  4. Spiritual History and Reality:  Identify spiritual authorities and dominant spirits in the region.  See Appendix for descriptions and methods for spiritual mapping.  Knowing these things is important both for strategy and for managing Spiritual Warfare/Conflict/using the Spiritual Authority of the Missionary

  5. Local Leadership:  To identify local leaders and those who carry personal impact

  6. Interest of the people:  To identify people who are open to and interested in the Gospel (people of peace)

  7. Current Gospel Status: To identify where other Kingdom workers are so there is strategic planning for planting and harvesting.

    • What denominations, local churches, mission agencies, and parachurch organizations make up the harvest force in this city or area?

    • Where are they located?  Where are they working?  Which people groups are they working among?

    • What methods are being used that are most effective for church-planting and evangelism?

    • How many churches are there?  How fast are they growing?  Why are the fastest ones growing as they are?

    • How can we use this information for planning our own strategies?

    • How can we work with churches that are already working in this area?  Are there others we can partner with and join others?

    • Recruiting local evangelists:  how will that be perceived?  Finances?  Can secondment take place in a way that does not cause pain

Understanding how to communicate cross-culturally (what to watch for, how to learn from local people/mentors, etc).
