I am willing to study other points of view, new ideas, and other beliefs
Cross-cultural workers interact with people who are much different than them. Those they live among may have different or contrasting viewpoints, practices, and beliefs. Effective ministry to others usually entails understanding them as fully as possible. Christian workers should study the viewpoints, perspectives, and beliefs of those to whom they minister. In Acts 17:16-23, it is evident that Paul the Apostle paid attention to the beliefs and practices of the Athenians. Although the did not adopt those beliefs, he communicated God’s message to them within the framework of those beliefs. Christian workers should be willing to deliberately examine practices and beliefs which are different than their own.
For those serving in Muslim contexts, this principle is especially important. Muslim beliefs and practices may be quite different than theirs. The temptation may be to simply dismiss or devalue these other perceptions. Christian workers in Muslim environments do well, however, to deliberately observe and learn about those around them. This practice provides understanding about the hearts and minds of Muslims, helps make connections with them, and gives insight about how to share God’s message to them.
