I am patient

God has expressed patience with sinful humans and desires that all come to repentance (2 Pet. 3:9). His followers are also to exhibit patience. Patience is one component of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23). We are to be patient with one another (Eph. 4:2). Patience in ministry is also required. Serving effectively in different cultures often demands much time. Time is spent moving into a new area and settling in. Time is spent developing relationships. Time is devoted to our work in that location including the business we may be involved in. Much time is needed to learn language and culture to communicate well. Beyond these tasks, time is spent on personal ministry to others. The worker does tedious work of sharing the gospel with others and discipling them. God’s kingdom often grows slowly in new locations, but it does grow according to his will and timing. A long-term view of ministry is needed. Being patient allows us to wait on God and see him work among others.

Those serving in Muslim contexts require large doses of patience. Ministry in Muslim areas is often slow for many reasons such as: misunderstandings about Jesus, suspicion of Jesus-followers, and resistance to change. Workers should be willing to serve patiently and diligently without seeing fruit as quickly as desired. They should be encouraged, however, that God is working in the lives of others and is pleased with their service.
