I know that I have been “called” to reach the lost in cross-cultural contexts
God leads his people in different ways to their ministry focus. For some people, it is through learning about specific peoples and locations. For others, it is through the encouragement of others who are aware of needs and the giftings of that worker. For some, church leadership is used to direct people to a specific ministry. Some individuals are led by God as they spend time with and pray to him. For others, God leads primarily through the words of the Bible itself. For most people, God’s leading includes a combination of the above methods. Regardless of how God has led a person in ministry, it is important that one knows they are clearly led or “called” to serve. Many people have the privilege to be called to reach the lost in cross-cultural contexts. As they serve, trials and discouragement may come. The enemy the Devil may attack by tempting, lying, or accusing to convince the person or family to stop (Matt. 4:1, John 8:44, 1 Pet. 5:8, Rev. 12:10). The person may feel they are inadequate or not serving well. Moses himself felt inadequate for the work God had called him to. The LORD responded by providing him assistance and encouraging him (Exod. 3:10-4:17). In these situations, it is important that one knows they have been clearly led by God to reach the lost living in different cultures. This certainty can be an encouragement in times of doubt or trouble.
Those serving in Muslim contexts need to have a clear sense they were led by God to that area and team. They should reflect on the unique way that God led them. It is wise to accept and rely on this leading until God specifically directs them to a different location or ministry (if he does). Ministry in Muslim areas is challenging. Many reasons for discouragement will appear. During these times, workers can be comforted in knowing that God has led them to that area, that he is personally with them, and that he is able to encourage and empower them.
