I am able to deal with hostility, criticism, and fear

As people serve in a different culture, they may encounter hostility and criticism, which can lead to fear. Hostility and criticism may arise from others because of different religious beliefs. They can also happen because we are foreigners or not from that area or ethnic group. Whatever the reason, it is common to experience fear. If workers can deal with these experiences and emotions, they will be better able to serve. They will also be able to model how to respond to criticism and hostility in a way which honors God and depends on him. Many biblical characters experienced fear, such as Joshua did after Moses died. The LORD instructed him to not be afraid or discouraged but rather be strong and courageous (Josh. 1: 7-9). Jesus instructed his disciples not to be afraid (John 14:27). During the storm on the sea, an angel of God told Paul the Apostle not to be afraid (Acts 27:23). The Psalmist declares that because the Lord is with him, he will not be afraid. “What can mere mortals do to me?” (Ps. 118:6). Looking to God during hostility and fear can instill courage.

Those serving in Muslim contexts may encounter criticism and hostility. It is important they can respond to these and to overcome their fear. God desires them to be courageous despite the challenges faced.
